Tikvah Mindorff – SJC coordinator
Welcome to the SJC! I am very excited to be working for the Student Justice Center this year at Brock. As an active member of the Brock community, I can see the need for more awareness about social issues that happen right here on campus and I look forward to help addressing these issues. A big part of the SJC is working together- so come to find out how we can collaborate! The SJC pairs with student groups to strengthen their efforts and provide assistance when we can. So give us your feedback, participate in our events and let us help you create a socially aware campus! Ibrahim Qureshi - SJC Peer Hi, my name is Ibrahim and I am a third year student in the Concurrent Education program here at Brock University. I am aspiring to be an educator who one day dreams of teaching English and History. I hope to one day open up a school in some remote village to allow underprivileged children who perhaps might never have had an opportunity at a formal education a chance to learn, because I believe an education is every child’s right. I am currently on the Undergraduate Student Affairs Committee and a BUSAC elected representative for the Faculty of Education. I am the current Co-Chair on the Events Committee at Learning Disabilities in the Niagara Region. My goal here at Student Justice Center is to raise awareness to help remove the negatives stigmas associated with learning disabilities and mental health issues in order to create a more inclusive learning environment at Brock University. I have had the opportunity to work with a number of amazing children have seen the negatives stigmas associated with learning disabilities and mental health issues. As an individual from a minority ethnic and religious group I understand the implications of social injustice; I would like to work towards tackling issues of inequality and discrimination. Randi Kalar - SJC Peer Hi, I'm Randi. I'm from Sarnia, Ontario. I am currently in my third year at Brock studying Criminology. Some of the things that interest me are soccer, volleyball, every kind of music - I honestly like everything. I'm definitely an outdoors kind of person and my favorite activity is camping - in a tent- cooking food on a fire. I'm a very sociable person and love meeting new people. I got involved with SWAT in September and that got me interested in getting more involved with Brock. The Student Justice Center is the first campaign that really interested me since it deals with a lot of issues I find important. I have some personal experience with bullying and thought the SJC would be a good way for me to offer help to those going through the same thing I went through. I'm very passionate about issues that affect me and those I'm close to. Susi Cruz - SJC Peer I am a third year student studying psychology and child youth studies. I love working with children and youth, especially working towards raising awareness of equality and fairness in child treatment. I enjoy cooking, jogging, tennis, and field hockey. I was born in Mexico and very proud of my roots. I am very excited to be part of the Student Justice Centre team and provide a listening ear for students facing different issues. Throughout my life I have experienced various aspects that contribute to this position and made me become the understanding and friendly person I now. See you around! Naomi Robbins - SJC Peer Hello, I’m Naomi, and I’m a second year combined Biology and Earth Sciences major. In high school I directed the History Advisory Board (a socially conscious group of students) which raised money and awareness for Human Rights (women’s safe houses, discrimination, and family violence), and Sub-Saharan African causes (building wells, schools, and AIDS relief). I am currently coordinating a project for the beatification of the St. Catharines downtown core called “Storefront Art!”, the goal of which is to both bring art to the vacant storefronts, as well as change the way in which Brock students are viewed by the St. Catharines community, into a positive one. I am also working to get better signage directing vehicles to Brock (both from within St. Catharines and off of the highways). I believe that justice begins with speaking out; it begins with involvement and courage. Without a voice there would be no change, and without change there would be no progress. The first step begins with us, begins with you, and begins with a visit to the Student Justice Center! Tessa Alexander - SJC Peer My name is Tessa Alexander and I grew up in Toronto. I am in my third year at Brock with a major in Psychology and a minor in Criminology. After completing my undergraduate degree, I hope to get my masters in some area of psychology, and eventually get a PhD. My main goal is to research within prominent areas that plague the study of psychology and validate previous research that attempts to predict human behavior. In high school I joined a committee entitled Amnesty International. It opened my eyes and ears to the oppressive behavior that happens worldwide, and as a result, I became infatuated with eliminating oppressive behavior. My main area of focus is within mental health. Many sectors of today’s society barely attempt to understand the hardships that those with behavioral or mental disorders have to go through on a daily basis. Having experience in talking with these individuals with my work at the Niagara Distress Centre, I feel it important to shed light on the oppressive behavior that occurs towards them. Laura Navarro - SJC Peer I am a 4th year Sociology Honors student with a minor in Spanish. In the future I aspire to work with Customs and Immigration or Corrections Canada. During my time at Brock I have learned to challenge assumptions, look at issues from different angles and study how people interact with each other in society. I wanted to become a member of the Student Justice Services committee because it is related to my field of study and because I strongly believe all students should have the same opportunities to succeed academically free of assault, harassment, discrimination, racism, and prejudice. I also wanted to help raise awareness of the services provides by the SJC and also to make sure students know that their experiences are valuable and important to make Brock University a more ethical and equal education institution. I am honored to be part of this team and hope to raise awareness of cultural issues at Brock since the university is made up of students of different cultural backgrounds, races and religious beliefs. |
